The
narrator continued his meeting both Charles Strickland and Dirk Stroeve but he
couldn’t see Strickland’s pictures. In spite of the fact that Strickland hadn’t
enough money to lead comfortable life, he didn’t sell his pictures. Shortly
before Christmas Dirk Stroeve came to ask the narrator to spend the holiday
with his family. Stroeve also wanted to see Strickland in his house that day. So
they came in his cell and found out that Strickland was very ill. Stroeve asked
his wife to let him bring Strickland into their house. Mrs. Stroeve hated Strickland
but finally she agreed. They had been looking after Strickland for a month and
a half, and after Strickland felt well he began painting in Stroeve’s studio. When
Stroeve asked Strickland to leave his house, his wife said him that she loved
this man and she was going to live with him.
